Self Help Guide

The range of self help methods available today is very extensive and continually growing. It is not easy for people seeking to improve themselves to know what method to choose.

We at BestSelfHelp have a lot of knowledge about self help, based on studies and own experiences,  and we intend to share that knowledge on this page and subpages. We intend to give an as unbiased as possible view of the various self help methods (* see note at the bottom) only colored by our own knowledge and experiences.

First we have to draw some border of what should be included, and to do that we have to define what we mean by self help.

By self help we mean: Some method or approach that can be learned from courses, books or multi media and that can be applied by one self to improve mentally. The important thing is you don’t need someone else or a therapist (except to learn the method) to help you improve. You can do it on your own.

Here’s a draft list of methods (very simplified – to be expanded later on):

Brain Wave Training
All brain wave techology builds on that the brain normally works in one of four wave patterns: the alfa, beta, delta and theta patterns. Some of those patterns are more suitable for self help work.
There are different kind of equipment:
- Feedback equipment
- Brain wave pattern modifiers
- Neural patterns eradicaters

CBT and similar
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a method to gradually train yourself to overcome your problems. This is done by learning to observe your thoughts,  feelings,  emotions and safe solutions in difficult situations and gradually train to break the pattern of behavior that leads to the problem.
TLM (The Loefke Method) shares some concepts with CBT but adds (and concentrates on) a methodology to more easily change beliefs that are in the way for the progress of the client. This way long standing problems can often dissolve in a few sessions.

Energy Techniques
- EFT
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a way to release negative feelings arising in difficult situations. It is done by tapping  special points on the body meridians. By tapping blocked energy in the meridians start to flow again resulting in that the negative feelings disappear. Being able to instantly get rid of unpleasant feelings makes it is easier to approach troublesome situations and overcome your problems.
- EmoTrance
Emotrance is a variant of  EFT where you release your negative feelings by mentally getting blocked meridian energy to start flowing again.
- BSFF (Be Set Free Fast)
BSFF shares some basic knowledge with EFT but instead of tapping it uses commands directed to the subconscious mind. A special “setup” is used to get the subconscious to catch on and understand how to help us dissolve problem issues.

Healing
- Reiki
Reiki is the “old” traditional healing. It is mainly used to heal physical injuries.
- Theta Healing
Theta Healing uses other “sources” than Reiki to assemble the energy needed for the healing to occur. Some consider it as more effective than Reiki. It can also be used to heal mental injuries.
- Reconnection Healing
This is highly effective healing method that aligns your body to new healing “sources”.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a method that teaches you how to be able to stay in the now. When you  are able to stay in the now you are not troubled by the past and you are not afraid of the future.

Releasing
Releasing is a way to deal with troublesome feelings. By learning the techniques you will be able to immediately release (drop) the bad feelings.
- Sedona Method
- The Release Technique

Self Hypnosis
Self hypnosis deals with changing problematic thought patterns in the subconscious mind. It is related to brain wave training as a change of pattern often is induced during the self hypnosis.

PSYCH-K
PSYCH-K is a set of procedures and techniques to facilitate change of beliefs. It contains techniques to communicate with, and get assistance from, the subconscious mind.

Hard-to-Classify Methods
Here I will mention some techniques that I consider pretty effective but which are a bit hard to classify and put into the categories above.
- Trauma Eradication
This is a simple and fast method to erase or reduce the effect of painful memories.
- Avatar
This methods has some resemblance to Mindfulness but it goes beyond that by also teaching techniques to erase or reduce negative believes. You will gradually be less distracted by negative thoughts and it will be easier and more enjoyable to stay in the present.
